$350,000 facility opens to help bilingual teachers with lessons

The first of six proposed centers to help Chicago Public Schools teachers develop bilingual course work opened Tuesday at the Tilden Career Community Academy, 4747 S. Union. The $ 350,000 center includes a library of teaching materials and a technology lab containing multilingual software. The system has 1,986 bilingual education teachers for about 60,000 students in English as a Second Language programs.

Park Ridge man charged in wife’s death

A Park Ridge man whose wife was found dead in their bathtub was charged Tuesday with her murder. Christopher T. Rojecki, 46, of the 600 block of Goodwin Drive, was arrested Monday, the day after he called police to report finding his wife dead. Marlena Rojecki, 34, was lying face down and naked in the water-filled tub. In court Tuesday, Rojecki said he had had a quarrel with his wife while she was taking a shower and hadn’t meant to kill her, police said. Rojecki’s bond was set at $ 500,000.

Teen sentenced for damage to school

A 14-year-old West Side boy was sentenced to four months in the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center after he admitted his part in causing $ 30,000 in damages last month at Cameron Elementary School. The boy cried as Juvenile Court Judge Carol A. Kelly told his grandmother he will be turned over to the Department of Children and Family Services for a “more structured home environment” after his release. Police arrested six students Dec. 12 after viewing a videotape of them spraying fire extinguishers, writing on walls with markers and stealing computers at their school at 1234 N. Monticello.

Mail sorter gets prison for charity theft

A South Side man was sentenced in federal court Tuesday to two years in prison and fined more than $ 68,000, the amount he was found to have stolen from Catholic Charities. Pierre Nakai Tall, 23, of the 7900 block of South Escanaba, reportedly took the money as he sorted mail for ABN AMRO Services Inc., a holding company for LaSalle National Bank, last year. Tall was arrested May 18 after a postal inspector planted a letter that emitted an alarm when Tall opened it. He pleaded guilty Sept. 2.
