SACRAMENTO—Secretary of State Bill Jones today announced that two new initiative measures have qualified for the June 1998 ballot. Election officials have verified the signatures on the petitions and have found that proponents for both measures have submitted in excess of the 433,269 signatures of registered voters required to place an initiative statute on the ballot.

Proponents James M. Righeimer, Mark W. Bucher, and Frank L. Ury submitted in excess of 480,766 valid signatures for “Political Contributions. Employers. Labor Unions. Foreign Entities. Initiative Statute” The proponents of this measure can be reached at (714) 573-2275.

“Education. Public Schools. English as Required Language of Instruction. Initiative Statute” has qualified for the June 1998 ballot with more than 510,796 valid signatures. Proponent Ron K. Unz can be reached at (415) 853-0368, Proponent Gloria Matta Tuchman can be contracted at (415) 853-0368.

These two measures join three other previously certified initiatives and four legislative measures for a total of nine ballot measures currently slated to appear on the June 1998 primary election ballot.

The ballot measures will not be assigned proposition numbers until after the January 22, 1998 statutory deadline for placing measures on the June 1998 ballot. When numbers are assigned to the propositions, “Political Contributions. Employers. Labor Unions. Foreign Entities. Initiative Statute” will appear on the ballot before “Education. Public Schools. English as Required Language of Instruction. Initiative Statute” since it was certified by Secretary Jones first.

The Secretary of State is currently contacting county election officials, the state printer and election supply vendors to determine the last possible date that the legislature may place additional measures on the June ballot without causing the printing of a supplemental ballot pamphlet. Secretary Jones will report the results of his survey to the Legislature on January 5, 1998.
