A community school district in the Bronx has been awarded a 158,878 federal grant to establish a bilingual education program to help students improve and increase their language proficiency.

The funds for School District 7 were secured by Rep. Jose Serrano from the U.S. Department of Education. The money will be used to develop “Comienzo,” which will incorporate Spanish and English learning activities, including literacy development, for students from kindergarten to second grade.

“Bilingual education is necessary to ensure that our children will be competitive in the global market. Depriving our school children of that advantage will only hurt the economic future of the country,” Serrano emphasized.

The Congressman, who represents the Bronx, said the money will be extremely helpful to the schools in the district and the students striving to achieve their goals. “It will also be used for family education, parents outreach, curriculum development, and tutoring,” he added.

About 300 students and their families are expected to benefit from “Comienzo,” which is being developed in partnership with Lehman College in the Bronx and will begin in September.
