Colorado High Court Pulls Tancredo Sponsored Initiative From Ballot

The Colorado Supreme Court Monday decided to remove from the November ballot an anti-bilingual education initiative spearheaded by Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., after ruling the ballot wording is “unclear and misleading.”

The initiative would require all public school students to be taught in English and prohibit any school district from being required to offer a bilingual program. The court unanimously concluded the ballot question approved by state officials included “improper sloganeering” and misleading language that might cause confusion for voters, the Denver Post reported.

Noting the Aug. 7 deadline to submit new petition signatures, Tancredo called the ruling “completely predictable,” because “this court has a proclivity to postpone a decision until it’s too late.”

Meanwhile, Tancredo’s Democratic challenger, Ken Tolz, attacked Tancredo for trying to dupe Colorado parents. “Tom Tancredo’s proposed initiative not only furthered a policy of intolerance, but as the (state) Supreme Court recognized, the initiative was downright deceptive and misleading,” said Tolz.
