Dual-language classes benefit

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded about $1.4 million to Santa Ana Unified School District to expand dual-language programs.

Santa Ana Charter School for the Arts and Sciences, which opens next school year, will receive $1.2 million over five years to start a program to educate English-speaking and limited-English-speaking students in two languages. An additional $175,000 will be used to start other classes in the district.

This is the first year of the nationwide grants, totaling $15 million, which aim to have 1,000 dual-language programs by 2005.
