Sen. John McCain won an award on February 23 from the League of United Latin American Citizens for supporting “English Plus”-one of the Left’s euphemisms for bilingual education. (Also honored that night: Vice President Gore.) “No one should have to abandon the language of their birth to learn the language of their future,” said McCain. Fine. But bilingual education actually keeps children from learning English-“the language of their future”-and hinders their success in American society. The state department of education in McCain’s own Arizona recently revealed that only 4 percent of its bilingual students are graduated into mainstream classrooms each year. That failure rate is worse than the one that persuaded Californians to ban bilingual education last year. Word is Ron K. Unz’s “English for the Children” campaign may be visiting Arizona next-and not a minute too soon.
