Local lawyer to run for education board

Denver lawyer Rico Munn announced he will run for the State Board of Education seat held by Gully Stanford.

Stanford isn’t expected to run again next year. He couldn’t be reached for comment.

Munn said he will push community involvement in schools, closing learning gaps and a more comprehensive assessment of schools than the CSAP tests offer.

‘Right now, the CSAP only looks at a small piece of how well a school performs,’ Munn said. ‘It’s not really an assessment of what a school is doing to help a student.’

On the issue of bilingual education, which may be on the November 2002 ballot, Munn said the problem with the debate over the pace at which children should learn English is that the argument is over procedure.
