Montero weighs bid for school board

Denver education activist Rita Montero may try to rejoin the city’s school board.

Montero lost her west Denver seat to the Rev. Lucia Guzman two years ago. Since then, she has become nationally known for her opposition to bilingual education. She and California businessman Ron Unz are seeking an amendment to the Colorado Constitution banning the use of languages other than English in most classrooms. It could go before voters in November 2002.

Montero said she has taken out petitions indicating her intention to run for the at-large seat held by Les Woodward, which is also being contested by civil rights lawyer Dale Sadler. She said she will collect signatures, which are due Friday, and then decide whether she wants to run against Sadler and Woodward in November.

Montero advocates changes in several Denver Public Schools programs she considers flawed, including English Language Acquisition, collaborative decision-making committees and the teacher pay-for-performance pilot.
