Parents Demonstrate for Bilingual Program

Parents and staff at Mary Hooker School in Hartford demonstrated in front of the school early Thursday against changes in bilingual education programs, attracting a crowd of as many as 70 people, participants said. School Principal Raul Montanez said faculty and parents are concerned that proposed changes in how the state bilingual program is implemented may result in smaller communities abandoning bilingual education.

Montanez, who testified before the legislature later in the day on the topic, said his school is not worried about Hartford altering its bilingual program, because it is so large. Puerto Rican students make up more than 50 percent of the school population in Hartford.
