Proponents, opponents face new, tight deadlines

A ruling Monday from the Colorado Supreme Court returns a proposed bilingual education initiative to a state board for correction. Here are the key deadlines:

April 22 — English for the Children of Colorado, the group authoring the anti-bilingual initiative, has 14 days to appeal the court ruling. Their opponents, English-plus, also can appeal the ruling.

May 1 — The state Title Board meets and would likely take up the task of reworking the initiative. The group also meets April 17 but may not touch on the issue because of the appeal period given the court ruling.

May 15 — Last scheduled meeting of the Title Board before the November election. English for the Children must gain the board’s approval of the reworked initiative before it can begin collecting signatures. English-plus can again appeal the reworked initiative to the state Supreme Court.

Aug. 5 — Last day to file a petition to place an initiative on the state ballot. English for the Children must submit 80,571 signatures to place its initiative on the ballot.
