FORT LEE—The Lewis F. Cole Middle School has been cited by the state as having one of the better bilingual education programs in New Jersey.

The program was one of nine bilingual and English-as-a-second-language programs recognized by the state Department of Education last week as being exemplary.

The school’s bilingual program for Japanese and Korean students was cited because it did an excellent job of integrating the students into all facets of the school; for its intensive English program; for its parent advisory program; and for its literary magazine, which included work from students with limited English proficiency.

Although Paramus was not among the nine school districts cited for their overall programs, a state spokesman said that parts of the district’s program will be recognized when awards are presented in the fall. These include a high school social studies class taught by a bilingual teacher teamed with a social studies teacher, and a middle school bilingual teacher’s efforts to speak English in a level appropriate for her students.

Kearny’s bilingual program also was cited by the state.

The other schools recognized were in Burlington, Camden, Cumberland, Gloucester, Middlesex, and Monmouth counties.
