3 Bilingual Students Win Awards For English

For three Denver Public Schools students, being ambitious is a good thing but being bilingual can mean extra rewards.

The school district and its English Language Acquisition Department honored Alejandrina Guzman, 19, of North High School; Gabriela Rubio, 12, of Grant Middle School; and Abdiel Aguilar, 9, of Brown Elementary School, as the Outstanding English Language Students of the Year.

The three students, who hail from Mexico, wrote two essays in Spanish and English, on ”The Value of Being Bilingual and Bicultural.” The three were honored at the Denver Museum of Natural History late Friday.

Alejandrina said in her winning essay that Hispanic immigrants need to move beyond low-income work.

”I wrote something aggressive,” Alejandrina said. ”We’re living in a community that is segregated and marginal, and we’re losing out on the scientific and technological fields.” Alejandrina received a one-year scholarship from Arapahoe Community College, $ 500 for books, and a membership to the Natural History Museum and IMAX Theater. Gabriela received a summer trip to Guanajuato, Mexico, history books, and membership to the museum and IMAX. Abdiel earned season passes to Six Flags Elitch Gardens and Water World, history books and a membership to the museum and IMAX.
