The University of New Mexico has received a $211,986 grant to help improve bilingual education services in rural New Mexico.

The funding was awarded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Training for all Teachers Program, Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., announced Wednesday.

“Strengthening bilingual programs by providing teachers with the best training available will greatly improve the quality of education in New Mexico,” Bingaman said.

Under the program, UNM each year will recruit two groups of 20 teachers who wish to complete a two-year master’s degree program in teaching with Limited English Proficiency, LEP, and English as a Second Language, ESL.

UNM also will develop LEP summer institutes that will be available to graduate students and area teachers.

According to Bingaman’s office, special emphasis will be placed on recruiting and retaining Navajo, Zuni and Spanish speaking participants.
