I am a bilingual teacher for the Santa Ana Unified School District. When I began teaching (just 2 years ago) I believed in the theory of bilingual education. However, now as I see my third grade class (of which 18 out of 20 were born in California) struggle with the transitions to English reading and writing I have lost hope in the program. What has kept me away from getting involved is my perception that so many English Only organizations are anti-immigrant and anti-hispanic. I feel that we are limiting these kids opportunities and that their parents do not realize what "transitonal" means when they put their kids into the program. Tom Hilvo |
