Letter to NABE

Ruslan Rubis
Thursday, September 3, 1998.

Dear NABE,

I am a non-English speaking emigrant who was fortunate to attend non-bilingual high school, yet I am still struggling with my English. I must always put in a special effort in order to write and speak good English.

It is my personal experience and belief that bilingual education for children has a very negative long term effect, for bilingual education cripples the child's ability to learn and think in English language.

And it is English which most likely will be the child's primary mode of communication, a tool which provides access to better higher education and better jobs.

Just like at the beginning of this century, today's emigrants come to this country in hopes of realizing "The American Dream". Speaking English is part of that dream.

Please do not rob the emigrants of their dream and their future. Stop bilingual education.

Sincerely,

Ruslan Rubis
An Emigrant and American
