Funds wasted on bilingual education Carmen Sorres
I am Spanish speaking and never received bilingual education. I spoke Spanish at home and English at school. I am a teacher in Contra Costa County. I feel, concerning the Unz initiative, that both the general population and most educators are ill-informed. The general population would never believe the amount of money that has been wasted over the last 15 to 20 years. Teachers who work in the bilingual education system will continue to protect their own jobs. They will be the last to admit reform is needed. Even the California Teacher's Association scares educators by saying, "Don't vote for the Unz initiative. You, as a teacher could be sued." Hogwash. The co-author of the initiative is a teacher in Southern California. I doubt she would put herself in a position to be sued. If a system doesn't work, change it, or modify it. Don't keep telling yourself it works. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure this out. A regular business would never be run this way. Schools might learn a thing or two by looking at how successful businesses are run. Maybe they'd be more successful in achieving goals. Carmen Sorres
