Desert Sun Editor I am a student at Center for Employment Training in Indio. I went out to ask some people in my neighborhood about what they think of bilingual education. I asked 5 people who had kids in school and this is what they think. Three people told me that they would prefer their kids to be in bilingual classes because they will be able to understand better English. Another person that I asked said that it's better for kids to have bilingual classes because they will understand the subjects. The other person told me that they prefer that their kids take only classes in English. One of those persons said that she would be glad if her daughter be in English only, because her daughter has been in bilingual classes for three years and does'nt undertand English. In my opinion, I think that it would be a good idea if they take away the bilingual classes, because I don't think that this program helped me. Maybe if I had'nt taken bilingual classes, I would now know how to speak, read, and write, English better. When I came to the U.S. and my mom took me to school, they put me in 4th grade. It was a bilingual class, and ever since I have taken bilingual classes. I was afraid to take English class only. Because I thought that the other students would laugh if I did'nt speak correct English. That is why I would prefer if they take them away. I also know that if I had'nt taken bilingual classes, I would'nt be embarrassed to speak English now. Sincerely yours, Maria Vargas
