Assembly Speaker Antonio Villaraigosa, D-Los Angeles, has named bilingual-education foe Ron Unz and 25 others to a blue-ribbon panel to develop recommendations on state and local government finance.
Unz is the Silicon Valley software entrepreneur who won passage last year of Proposition 227, the anti-bilingual education measure now in force. Villaraigosa and Unz were on opposite sides in the battle over Proposition 227.
In addition to Unz, Villaraigosa also named to the panel Ruben Barrales, a former San Mateo County supervisor and the unsuccessful GOP candidate for controller last November.
Other commission members include Alan Bersin, superintendent of the San Diego Unified School District; Joel Fox of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association; and William Hauck, president of the California Business Roundtable and president of the California State University Board of Trustees.
On the agenda for the Speaker’s Commission on State and Local Government Finance are the following topics: the adequacy of local revenues, local control over tax rates, redevelopment, control and financing of schools, and allocation of property taxes.
