The next time supporters of bilingual education accuse their critics of being racist, don?t take it too seriously.

A federal judge has ruled that a voter-approved California initiative did not discriminate against minorities or violate a law requiring schools to overcome students? language barriers.

The judge said federal law requires only a “valid educational theory,” when teaching English to students. California?s plan passes that test. There are other ways to teach English to non-English-speaking students. It?s unfair to automatically label people who want to try another way as racist.
