California is the home of expensive politics, but until now it has never seen a single donation of $1.5 million to a campaign other than someone’s own. But that’s the sum Univision Communications owner A. Jerrold Perenchio just gave the committee fighting Prop. 227, which would end the bilingual education mandate in California. Univision says the donation was made because Prop. 227 is "bad policy." But analysts note that last season the Spanish-language network lost 26% of younger male viewers–many to English programming. But despite being outspent, Prop. 227 still enjoys the support of a healthy majority of Hispanics. When it comes to bilingual ed’s conspicuous failures, their message is clear in whatever language: Ya Basta (Had Enough).
