SAN YSIDRO — The San Ysidro School District is offering free English classes to adults who pledge to tutor school-age children.
The district also offers free study materials and free baby-sitting during classes.
Adult students need not have children in the schools to enroll, but they will be asked to sign a pledge that they will help tutor a child in exchange for the free English lessons.
San Ysidro offers the classes at four sites: Sunset, Willow and Beyer elementary schools and the Villa Nueva Apartments. There are day and night classes.
The classes are paid for by the state through a provision in Proposition 227, the voter-approved initiative to ban bilingual education.
To enroll, call Sophia Bouvier, San Ysidro’s director of state and federal programs, at 619-428-4476, Ext. 3028.
