WATSONVILLE—In an unusual English as a Second Language class in Watsonville, adult immigrants are learning to speak English so they can help their school-age kids with their homework.

The drop-in program began in mid-January at the Pajaro Valley Unified School District’s new satellite adult education center in Watsonville. The goal at the Community Based English Tutoring Resource Center is to encourage families to help each other learn, said instructor Francesca Hampton.

Both adults and children will be more apt to practice their new language skills if it’s fun for the entire family, she said.

When voters approved Proposition 227, which eliminated bilingual education in California schools, the measure included transitional funding for programs to teach parents to help their school-age children with English. School districts, which are funded based on the number of students they serve who are not fluent in English, were left to design their own programs.
