Signatures verified for language education initiative

DENVER—The secretary of state’s office verified enough signatures Thursday for a ballot initiative to require children who do not speak English to be placed in an intensive language program. The initiative will appear on the November ballot. If it passes, non-English-speaking students would be placed in a one-year English program unless their parents request bilingual education.

Of the more than 138,000 signatures submitted by petitioners Aug. 5, nearly 98,000 were valid, Secretary of State Donetta Davidson said.

An initiative needs 80,571 signatures of registered voters to qualify for the ballot.

Challenges to the signature count must be filed within 30 days.
